Professor Oluyemi Akinloye is a renowned Professor of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnosis. He is the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science and currently serves as the Director of the Center for Genomics of Non-communicable Diseases and Personalized Healthcare (CGNPH) at the University of Lagos. He is also the Programme Director for the Executive Master of Health Logistics and Supply Chain Management (EM-HLSCM). Previously, he was a Senior Research Associate at the Nanotoxicology Research Group, University of Alberta, Canada.
He has a rich academic background, having supervised over ten PhDs and five Fellows of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN). His passion for comparative genomics led to the establishment of the Center of Excellence (CoE) for Genomics of Non-Communicable Diseases at the University of Lagos. The center now offers a postgraduate programme in Genomics of NCDs and hosts a well-attended Annual Summer School on “Dry and Wet Lab” techniques. With over 100 publications and one patent registered in North America, Professor Akinloye has made significant contributions to the field of cancer genomics and nanomedicine
He is a Fellow of several distinguished societies, including the Royal College of Pathology, UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He is also an Alumnus of the Lindau Meetings of Nobel Laureates and served as the Academic Ambassador of the Council from 2008 to 2018. Professor Akinloye’s postdoctoral work was conducted at the WHO Collaboration Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Andrology, University of Muenster, Germany. He has been a visiting fellow to prominent institutions such as Harvard School of Public Health and the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at the University of Dusseldorf.
In addition to his academic endeavors, Professor Akinloye has actively contributed to public health initiatives in Nigeria. He played a pivotal role in the validation of diagnostic kits for COVID-19 and is currently the Vice-Chair of the National HIV Laboratory Task Team (NHLTT). He is a member of the NCDs taskforce and an expert on the Federal Ministry of Health’s technical working group. His expertise extends to Health Logistics and Supply Chain Management, where he serves as a consultant to various global health organizations.
The Center for Genomics of NCDs, under his leadership, is part of the African–European Consortium of the Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE), focusing on advancing genomics research and personalized healthcare.
